"Driving A 10 Year Old Car Along the Road to Wealth !!"

About once a week I need my fix !! I get into my 10-year-old Mercury Topaz and I drive to my favorite dealership. You know the one. It has the row of beautiful full-size cab-and-a-half pick-up trucks out in front, sitting up on boulders that look like the ones we all drive over on a daily basis.

And they call to me. They say "Dave, I'm beautiful come take me for a spin". I drive over to them and I get out of my car. I hear a snicker from within the row. My Topaz feels wholly inadequate amongst these fine vehicles. For a fleeting moment I get that high. I picture myself in the seat, driving to beat the band, over hill and dale. I get closer. I have to get a look at the interior. Leather and cup holders abound. It is a dizzying experience.

How many of you have been in the very same spot? These vehicles are absolutely seductive!! The vehicles are already selling themselves in my psyche when, I am approached by a stealthy sales person. They approach with the keys outstretched. How can I resist the temptation?

I walk to the passenger side window. I scan the price sheet and at last I see it !! It's at the bottom, in bold print. The PRICE!!!! I retract my hand quickly before the keys touch my skin. I do an about face and I head for my trusty Topaz. It's waiting there for me with a big grin on its face!! As I sit back into the well-worn seat, it asks me if I'm satisfied. I sigh and say, "let's go home".

I have done it again. I have reaffirmed my commitment NOT to succumb to the temptation that these new vehicles present. We've all had this experience and I would wager that the outcome of my visit to the dealership differs greatly from yours.

I am going to tell you something that you already know deep down. You do not NEED a new vehicle to get you from one place to another. Simple fact !! We, as a society just don't want to accept this. The problem in denying this fact is that we place ourselves in a tremendous cash flow problem when we buy new vehicles.

This is not to say that there isn't a time and place for the purchase of a new vehicle. It is not prudent, though to be buying a new vehicle when you cannot pay cash for it. There is a strong statement!! If you cannot afford it, you shouldn't buy it. You lose tremendously on the depreciation and contrary to the belief of many, the automobile is NOT an asset. Why would you pay such a grand sum of money for something that will never earn you a red cent???

A sound financial plan will always minimize the amount of money that is put toward the purchase of liabilities and any vehicle that doesn't make money for you is a liability!!

This leads to an interesting question. Why would you ever consider buying a brand new vehicle? The answer to that question is Emotion. We buy many items on an emotional level and that is why we get ourselves in such financial straits.

I bet you are wondering why I would ever go near a dealership again if I had decided to forgo the purchase of a new vehicle. I do it to appease the emotions within me that need to look, touch and smell new vehicles. I need to reaffirm my resolve on a regular basis. This makes me sure that the decision to drive my 10-year-old Topaz was correct.

The tremendous resources that we divert toward the purchase, financing and maintenance of a new vehicle could be redirected toward the purchase of income generating assets. In time, these assets will generate enough income that you will be able to not only live off of them but be able to purchase that NEW vehicle from surplus cash. This is when you can consider yourself truly wealthy.

To Your Wealth!!!
